Anthropic has brought Claude into Google’s office apps. Its October 6 announcement puts Claude for Google Workspace, an add-on for Docs, Sheets and Slides, into public beta on all paid Claude plans, and adds new connectors so Claude can create and edit Google files from a chat. This article covers what it does, how much control you keep, and what the announcement leaves out. We read the announcement; we have not installed or tested the add-on.

What is Claude for Google Workspace?

The add-on opens Claude in a sidebar next to your file. Claude can read the doc, sheet or deck you have open, see which text, cells or slides you selected, and change the file directly. You install it from the Google Workspace Marketplace, then open a file and choose Extensions, Claude, Open Claude. Admins can deploy it to a domain or selected groups from the Google Admin console.

What can Claude do in Docs, Sheets and Slides?

Anthropic describes these examples:

  • Docs: fix a sentence or restyle a heading in place without touching the surrounding formatting; propose bigger rewrites as suggestion cards in the sidebar, each highlighting the passage it would change, which you apply or dismiss.
  • Sheets: write formulas, build pivot tables and native charts, add tabs, and for joins or cleaning, pull a range into Python and write the results back.
  • Slides: build new slides from your deck’s layouts and themes, then check its work and flag elements that overlap or run off a slide, or text that is hard to read.

How much control do you keep?

You choose how autonomous Claude is. In the default Ask before edits mode each change appears as an approval card with a summary and Claude waits for your approval. In Accept all edits mode it works through the task and applies changes without stopping.

What about connectors and enterprise controls?

Signed in with your Claude account, the sidebar has the same models, connectors and skills you use in Claude. Anthropic’s example is a quarterly review deck that pulls account history from Salesforce and call notes through a Drive connector, and a saved skill that lets a team repeat the format. On Enterprise plans, the Compliance API, customer-managed encryption keys (CMEK) and OpenTelemetry audit export apply to the add-on too.

Separately, the new Google Docs, Sheets and Slides connectors (beta) let you start in Claude and have it create and edit Google files from the chat. You can paste a Google file link or ask for a new doc, sheet or deck, and on supported setups it opens in a pane beside the conversation. Claude’s access matches your existing Google sharing permissions. On Team and Enterprise plans an owner or primary owner must enable the connectors first.

What to keep in mind

These are our observations:

  • It is a beta from the vendor. The announcement describes capabilities, not accuracy or failure rates, and we have not tested it.
  • Review before accepting. The default mode asks before each edit, and that is the safer choice for shared or important files; “Accept all edits” trades review for speed.
  • Details are missing. The announcement does not say how the add-on counts against plan usage limits, which regions or Google Workspace editions are supported, or how it compares with Google’s own AI features.
  • Permissions still matter. Because Claude’s access follows your Google sharing permissions, check who can see a file before asking Claude to pull other data into it.

Prepared from Anthropic’s announcement “Claude now works with Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides” (October 6, read in full through a browser) and the @claudeai post of the same day. We did not install or test the add-on or the connectors. All capabilities and claims are Anthropic’s.
